The Thai lottery winners of the 16 June 2026 draw included two sisters from a village in Chamni district, Buriram, who were not holding a matching pair at all. A number she had followed for years

Suda, 26, is the younger of the two. Some days before the draw she had driven to Khon Kaen to deal with paperwork, and on the way she stopped at a lottery stall — the ordinary, unremarkable act that sits at the start of most Thai lottery millionaire stories.

She did not ask a monk, and she did not have a dream. She asked for a number connected to her own car’s registration — a set of digits she liked, and one she had been following and buying for a long time, in the patient way a lot of Thai players stay loyal to one number for years. She did not spell out how she got from the plate to the six digits, and the reporting did not press her on it.

The vendor had two tickets on it. She bought both, kept one, and handed the other to her older sister Thanyalak, 41, a building contractor. Neither of them thought about it again for the rest of the month.

On the afternoon of 16 June the sisters were out running errands. Thanyalak went into a shop; Suda stayed in the car. To pass the time she pulled the ticket out and checked it against the result.

The six digits matched the first prize exactly. She rang her sister straight away. Only when they compared both slips did the second half of it land: Thanyalak’s ticket carried the same number, so it had won too.

That is a detail worth pausing on, because it is unusual among Thai government lottery winners. The famous ฿12 million figure normally belongs to one person who bought a stapled pair. Here the pair had been deliberately separated — and the split turned a single windfall into two independent ฿6,000,000 prizes, one in each sister’s name.

Straight to the police station, like almost every big winner

Before anything else, the two of them drove to Nang Rong police station and asked the duty officer to enter the tickets in the daily record.

Inside Thailand it is close to standard procedure, and it is why so many photographs of Thai lottery jackpot winners are taken against the same beige station wall. A government lottery ticket is a bearer instrument: whoever physically holds the signed slip can claim it. Filing a police record creates a dated, official note of who held which ticket, which matters enormously if the slip is later lost, damaged or disputed.

Her birthday fell the following month, and she called the win the biggest gift of her life.

After that, the plan is almost aggressively ordinary. They intend to keep taking contracting jobs together, save what is left, and manage it carefully with the family’s future in mind. No shopping list, no press conference, no cash stacked on a folding table.

Why ฿12 million keeps appearing in Thai lottery winner news

Newcomers ask this constantly. If the first prize is ฿6,000,000, why does every other headline say twelve?

Because government lottery tickets are printed and sold in matching pairs — two slips carrying identical digits, usually stapled together. Buy the set and a first-prize hit pays twice.

The Buriram sisters arrived at the same total by a different route: one buyer, two tickets, then one given away. The arithmetic is identical, but the outcome is not. There is no omen here and no prophecy. There is a set of digits someone had carried in their head for years, a stall on the road to Khon Kaen, a ticket handed to a sister for no particular reason, and an afternoon spent waiting in a parked car.
