How the birth numbers are worked out
The spirit is doing arithmetic, not magic, and the arithmetic is worth seeing. Three things come out of a birth date, and all three are drawn from traditions that long predate the lottery.
Your Chinese zodiac animal comes from the year, on the usual twelve-year cycle counted from the Rat. Your Thai birth-day colour comes from the day of the week you were born — red for Sunday, yellow for Monday, pink for Tuesday, green for Wednesday, orange for Thursday, blue for Friday, purple for Saturday. It is the same system behind the colour people wear on an auspicious day, and each day carries its own small set of traditional numbers. Your core number is pure digit arithmetic: add the digits of the day, the digits of the month and the digits of the year, then keep adding the digits of the total until one digit is left.
A worked example: 7 September 1983
Take a birth date of 7 September 1983 and run it through by hand.
- Core number. The day gives 7. The month, September, gives 9. The year gives 1 + 9 + 8 + 3 = 21. Add those: 7 + 9 + 21 = 37. Then 3 + 7 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. The core number is 1.
- Zodiac animal. 1983 lands on the Pig, the twelfth animal of the cycle.
- Birth-day colour. 7 September 1983 was a Wednesday, so the colour is green.
From there the spirit builds a pool. The two-digit numbers that reduce to a core of 1 are 01, 10, 19, 28, 37, 46, 55, 64, 73, 82 and 91 — eleven numbers out of a hundred. Nine is the lucky digit in Thai number culture, so numbers that both reduce to your core and contain a nine, in this case 19 and 91, are drawn first. The traditional numbers of your birth day are added next, then a few long-standing Thai favourites to make up a set of eight. Tap Generate new numbers and the arithmetic stays the same while the selection from the pool changes, which tells you something in itself.
And the dream half
The second reading has nothing to do with your birth date. Thai dream interpretation (ตำราทำนายฟัน) pairs a dream symbol with a set of numbers handed down through dream books and, these days, the Thai press. Dreaming of a snake is read quite differently from dreaming of a wedding or a ghost, and each carries its own numbers. The full set is in the dream number dictionary.
What this is, honestly
This is a game built on a real and much-loved tradition, and it is worth saying plainly what it is not. None of the arithmetic above changes the odds of anything. A Thai lottery draw is an independent random event: the numbers have no memory of your birthday, your zodiac animal or last night’s dream, and no method on this page or anywhere else improves your chance of matching them. We explain why in why you can’t predict lottery numbers, and the wider culture of lucky and unlucky digits in lucky and unlucky numbers in Thailand.
Enjoy it for what it is, spend only what you would happily lose, and read our Responsible Play guidance before you buy a ticket. If you want to see what a number has actually done over twenty years rather than what tradition says about it, the number search and the statistics are next door.
