Most Thai lottery winners disappear for a week. Sompong Phusakul went to work. The 46-year-old, who has cut the grass and stocked the shelves at the same minimart in Tha Wung market, Lopburi for more than twenty years, held two Thai Government Lottery tickets printed 730640 when the first prize was announced on 16 September 2026. They were worth ฿6,000,000 each — ฿12 million in total. The following morning he rode his motorcycle to the shop at the usual hour and clocked in.

The tickets he had not paid for yet

Sompong lives in Hua Samrong, a subdistrict of Tha Wung district in Lopburi province. On the morning of the draw he stopped at the market stall he always buys from and picked up a pair of tickets carrying the same six digits.

He did not pay for them. He and the vendor have known each other for years, and the money could wait until the end of the week. Then he got on with the job: a brush cutter, a strip of grass beside the shop, an ordinary Wednesday.

When the Government Lottery Office announced the first prize that afternoon, the number was 730640. Both of his slips matched.

I could not sleep all night. I waited until the morning to tell my wife.

He told nobody that evening. The next day his wife went with him to begin the claim, and the news travelled around the market the way it always does — faster than the winner does.

What made the story national was what he did on 17 September. He rode his motorcycle to the minimart at his usual time, worked his shift, and asked the owners for permission to slip out for half an hour. He wanted to go and pay the lottery seller for the two tickets.

Why two tickets made him a ฿12 million winner

Readers outside Thailand often read a twelve-million-baht headline as a rolling jackpot. It is not. The first prize in the Thai Government Lottery is a fixed ฿6,000,000 per ticket and has been for years.

Government tickets are printed and sold in identical pairs, so anyone who takes a whole set is holding two chances at the same number, each paying in full. Two matching slips pay ฿12 million; eight pay ฿48 million; ten pay ฿60 million. The odds do not improve at all — only the payout multiplies. Latest Thai lottery winners: the full 16 September 2026 result

The Government Lottery Office announced the draw on the afternoon of Wednesday 16 September 2026. The first prize was 730640, paying ฿6,000,000 per ticket. The two adjacent numbers, 730639 and 730641, paid ฿100,000 each.

The front-three numbers were 060 and 521; the last-three were 266 and 041; the last-two was 64. Those lower tiers are where the great majority of the money actually goes, in four-thousand and two-thousand baht slices, to people who will never appear in an article.

The digital lottery winner on Paotang who took ฿24 million

Paper is only half of a modern Thai draw. On the digital side, the L6 lottery sold through the Paotang app produced 31 first-prize tickets on 730640 — ฿186,000,000 from that channel alone.

They were not spread evenly. Twenty-two buyers held a single ticket each, one held two, one held three, and one held four. That last account was the largest single digital lottery winner on Paotang from this draw, collecting ฿24,000,000 without leaving the house.

Sompong was not even the only ฿12 million winner of the day. In Phatthalung, a 33-year-old known publicly as “Om” rang his usual seller to ask how many tickets were left unsold, was told eighteen, and bought the lot without choosing a number. The seller charged him for sixteen and threw in two. He, too, walked away with ฿12 million, and said he would clear the family’s farm-bank debt first.

What Thai lottery winners actually take home

Headline figures are gross figures. Any prize above ฿20,000 must be claimed at the Government Lottery Office in Nonthaburi rather than at a shop or a stall. The ticket is signed on the reverse, identification is checked against the payment system, every slip is examined under a blacklight, and stamp duty of 0.5% is taken at the counter — ฿60,000 on a ฿12 million win.

Winners book an online queue in advance through the GLO website or app, and payment is made by bank transfer or Krung Thai Bank cheque rather than in cash. One piece of local practice is worth knowing, because most big Thai government lottery winners do it first: take the tickets to a police station and have them logged in the daily record before going near a claim counter. It is free, it takes twenty minutes, and it creates a dated official note that these particular slips were in your hands.

How Thai lottery winners spend the money — and why this one kept his job

Asked what he would do with ฿12 million, Sompong gave the answer that turns up in a surprising number of Thai lottery winner interviews. He will build a house. The one he lives in is falling apart, and replacing it comes before anything else. Whatever is left will be put aside for his family.

The couple who own the minimart said he had worked honestly for them for more than twenty years, that they were delighted for him, and that they would help him look after the money. He told them he was not leaving.

That is the part Thailand latched onto. Among this year’s Thai lottery millionaire stories — the Ratchaburi man with eight matching slips, the monk in Khon Kaen, the auntie in Kamphaeng Phet who gave half her luck away before the draw — this one is the quietest. A man became a millionaire on a Wednesday afternoon, and on Thursday morning he showed up early, because he still owed somebody eighty baht for two lottery tickets.
